158. Pilate Surrenders to the Jews

        ¹²Upon this Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend.”
        ¹³When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement. ¹⁴Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.^a He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”
        ¹⁵They cried out, “Away with him, crucify him!”
        Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?”
        The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
        ²³They were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. ²⁴So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be granted. ²⁵He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, whom they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.
        ²⁴So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves.”
        ²⁵And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”

        ³When Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, ⁴saying, “I have sinned in betraying innocent blood.”
        They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”
        ⁵And throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and hanged himself.
