155. Jesus Appears before Pilate Again

        ¹³Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, ¹⁴and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people. After examining him I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges. ¹⁵Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Behold, nothing deserving death has been done by him. ¹⁶I will therefore chastise him and release him.”
        ⁸And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he was wont to do for them. ¹⁵Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. ¹⁶And they had then a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas, ¹⁹a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city, and for murder. ¹⁷So when they gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you, Barabbas or Jesus?”
        ¹¹But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. ¹⁰Pilate perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. ¹⁸But they all cried out together, “Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas.”
