19. Calling of Matthew; Banquet at His House

        ⁹Jesus saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax office and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
        ¹⁰And as he sat at table in the house behold many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples. ¹¹And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
        ¹²But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are whole need not a physician, but those who are sick. ¹³For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

20. Choosing of the Twelve

        ¹⁴And he ordained twelve whom also he named apostles,^a that they should be with him and that he might send them forth to preach. ²The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother; James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother; ³Philip and Bartholomew (Nathaniel); Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James, the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus (Judas); ⁴Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

a   “And he ordained twelve whom also he named apostles,”—The word apostle comes from the Greek to send, and refers to the twelve men that Jesus chose as his personal associates and sent forth as messengers of his gospel of the kingdom.
