153. Pilate Examines Jesus Privately

        ³³Pilate entered the praetorium again and called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
        ³⁴Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”
        ³⁵Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?”
        ³⁶Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews.”
        ³⁷Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?”
        Jesus answered, “I am, as you say, a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who loves the truth hears my voice.”
        ³⁸Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”^a
        After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again, and told them, “I find no fault in him.”
        ⁵But they were urgent, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place.”
